The Temptation-Accusation Cycle
The percentage of men who have gotten into pornography is pretty high. A quick review of all the surveys out there reveals that somewhere between 50 and 80 percent of men look at porn. Fortunately, the stats for Christian men are way different at around 50 to 80 percent. (Note: that’s not a typo, but it is a bit of sarcasm.)
At least once a month I get an email from someone who wants help getting out of a porn addiction. Some men feel “stuck” in it, like they can’t stop. Then, on top of that, they feel super alone in guilt and shame when no one else they know struggles with it—or at least no one admits to it! The power of sin is offering men first the temptation and then the accusation once they give in.
They first feel controlled, then blamed and shamed.
The percentage of women who look at pornography is lower but still in the 20 to 40 percent range. Christian women report that in addition to fantasy and lust, some of their main struggles include bitterness, resentment, criticism or slander, and lack of trust. First they feel controlled by this sort of thinking. Then they feel guilty for being controlled by it! Again, the power of sin offers them tempting thoughts, and then it accuses them of generating those thoughts. They too feel controlled, then blamed and shamed as they entertain thoughts like, “If I were a real Christian, I wouldn’t think these things!”
No matter your struggle, you are all too familiar with this cycle. You’ve lived it. But what if you need to rethink what is happening to you in those moments? What if you are not the source of the thoughts that plague you? Are you willing to consider reinterpreting your whole thought life in a brand-new way?
